Book launch at Ruhr University Bochum: ‘On the way to normality? LGBTQ+ families and their struggle for recognition’
In this book, Julia Teschlade, Mona Motakef and Christine Wimbauer use qualitative family interviews to provide insights into the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ families: How do they realise their desire to have children? How do they shape their family life? What legal and social barriers do they face? The authors show that LGBTQ+ families draw on heterosexual family norms, but at the same time expand them. Through their daily struggles for recognition, they shape and change what family and parenthood mean today – and what they may mean inthe future.
The event is being organised in collaboration with the Marie Jahoda Centre for International Gender Studies (MaJaC, RUB) and the Institute for Peace Security Law and Humanitarian International Law (IFHV, RUB).
Afterwards, the IFHV invites you to a small champagne reception.
The book is available here (in german) in open access.
Registration at ifhv@rub.de is required to participate.
Time: 20 January 2026, 4–6 p.m.
