Students from the B.A. in Sociology, together with Prof. Mona Motakef, present the results of their interview study on „Omas gegen Rechts“ (Grandmas against the right)

Presentation at the annual conference of the Network for Women’s and Gender Studies on November 13, 2026, in Essen.
“Omas gegen Rechts” is a civil society initiative that mobilizes in Germany and Austria against the societal shift to the right and anti-feminism, and in support of an open society. Founded as recently as 2017 and awarded the “Aachen Peace Prize” in 2024, the “largest women’s movement on the streets” (taz 2024) has become an indispensable part of the current protest landscape.
In a qualitative research workshop spanning two semesters, Mona Motakef and her students explored the connection between the visibility of women’s life contexts, female aging, and civic engagement. To this end, they conducted narrative interviews with “Omas gegen Rechts” and analyzed them hermeneutically.
At the annual conference “Who Lives to What Age? Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Age and
Gender” (November 13, 2026), organized by the Network for Women’s and Gender Studies, they will jointly present their findings at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
