On September 27, 2024, the Queer Policy Human Rights Conference of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag took place for the second time in Paul-Löbe-Haus in Berlin. Invited federal politicians, academics, association representatives and activists had their say in several panel sessions and discussed current LGBTIQA+ equality issues.

The discussion on the topic of ‘Queer people in old age’, moderated by Anke Hennig, Member of the German Bundestag, focussed on key topics relating to old age such as participation, care and housing as well as the associated legal challenges and specific needs. Francesco Cavallo, a Master's student on the Ageing Societies degree programme, was one of four speakers to contribute to the discussion on the living situation of older queer people and discuss the current opportunities and challenges of ‘queer age(ing)’ in the Federal Republic of Germany. Francesco Cavallo is currently writing his MA thesis on ‘trans* in home care’ at Prof. Dr. Mona Motakef's department.

The upcoming Ninth Report on Ageing by the Federal Government entitled ‘Growing old in Germany - Diversity of potential and inequality of opportunities for participation’, under the leadership of head of degree programme Prof. Dr. Martina Brandt, will dedicate a special chapter to LGBTIQA+.
